Academic threatens to sue university after pro-trans students disrupted talk
""Everyone has a right to peaceful protest, but that must never amount to a heckler's veto, which means shutting down other people's right to speak," "This isn't just about my rights as a visiting speaker, this is about the rights of the university community to hold discussions and to have people come and listen.""
""went ahead safely, in line with our strong commitment to upholding free speech", adding: "Although protesters caused unacceptable disruption, appropriate measures were in place to enable the event to continue and to protect the speaker and attendees.""
""priority and influenced the university""
Professor Alice Sullivan of University College London authored the Sullivan Review on how public bodies record gender identity and biological sex. She has written to the University of Bristol and the Office for Students alleging failure to protect freedom of speech. Her talk at the University of Bristol on 22 October 2025 was disrupted by protesters who allegedly banged on windows, used megaphones and set off fire alarms, and some potential attendees reportedly felt intimidated and did not attend. She and her lawyers say the university had 15 months to secure a safer venue and that the LGBTQ+ staff network's views were given priority. A university spokesperson said the event went ahead safely with appropriate measures in place, that protesters caused unacceptable disruption, and that Sullivan thanked security and met the vice-chancellor.
