AAUP: Faculty Pay Rises Again, but Not to Pre-Pandemic High
Briefly

Participating colleges and universities in the AAUP's annual faculty pay survey reported increases in inflation-adjusted average salaries for full-time faculty over two years. From fall 2022 to fall 2023, salaries rose by 1.5%, and by 1.8% from fall 2023 to the following fall. However, these gains are insufficient as salaries remain 6.2% below fall 2019 levels due to historical inflation and budgetary constraints. Challenges like declining college enrollment and government funding cuts pose further risks to faculty pay increases.
Real average salaries have still not fully recovered from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and remain about 6.2 percent lower than they were in fall 2019.
We are observing an uptick in college closings. The college-age population is expected to shrink considerably in some states over the next several years.
Given recent actions taken by the Trump administration, both public and private institutions are facing funding cuts, such as freezes to NIH grants.
