Walgreens has reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice to pay up to $350 million after being accused of filling millions of illegal prescriptions for opioids. The settlement includes a minimum payment of $300 million, with an additional $50 million due if the company undergoes a major change before 2032. The allegations center around Walgreens allegedly ignoring red flags and pressuring pharmacists to fill prescriptions quickly, leading to compliance issues. This settlement closes all opioid-related litigation against Walgreens amid its ongoing struggles with declining sales and market presence.
"We strongly disagree with the government's legal theory and admit no liability," Walgreens spokesperson Fraser Engerman said in a statement.
The complaint says Walgreens pharmacists filled these prescriptions despite clear red flags that the prescriptions were highly likely to be invalid.
