A family visited a small nursing home in Chapala, Mexico, reached through an inconspicuous iron door and an enclosed garden. The move was driven by dementia and declining physical health that became too difficult for a husband to manage at home in Washington state. Insurance no longer covered care at a medicalized facility near Seattle, and continuing stateside nursing home care threatened to bankrupt the family. The Chapala facility housed about 21 residents in a communal courtyard with bright yellow apartment buildings. Many residents were English-speaking Americans and Canadians with limited Spanish. Large numbers of Americans receive Social Security benefits abroad, and many send checks to U.S. bank accounts while spending them largely in other countries, including Mexico.
