Malawi-Israel health workers deal: Who benefits the most? DW 05/26/2025
Briefly

The Malawian government has signed an agreement with Israel to send trained nurses and midwives to work in Israeli health institutions, aiming to tackle high unemployment among healthcare professionals in Malawi. The deal, welcomed by many aspiring nurses like Christina Jere and Elizabeth Gondwe, offers an escape from local job scarcity while providing financial support for their families. However, there is significant criticism regarding potential exploitation and the adverse effects on Malawi's already strained health system, raising concerns about the government's motivations and the impact on citizens' welfare.

I've stayed here for a long time without being employed. I'm so excited because here in Malawi I was unable to help my family... I eventually envision returning to Malawi with more skills and experience.
