Hands-On Learning at Quinnipiac Clinic
"Without us treating them, they're not getting care and they're not getting better, so it allows us to really make an impact in somebody's life. [The clinic] really allows us to work with a wide variety of patients from many different backgrounds."
"Our health-care delivery system in the United States really is a struggle for a lot of people who are uninsured or underinsured. There were plenty of clients who actually needed our services if we could do it free of charge, so filling that gap has been a win-win for everybody."
"It started off with students saying, 'Wow, wouldn't this be really cool to have a free clinic where clients could come and students could learn?' From there, it has really expanded and been enriched."
Quinnipiac University's EQUIP Rehabilitation Clinic operates as a student-led initiative providing free physical therapy services to uninsured and underinsured patients. Founded in 2012 as a capstone project, the clinic has expanded significantly, with over 80 percent of the university's doctor of physical therapy students volunteering alongside approximately 60 other volunteers. Operating Tuesday evenings, the clinic has served more than 400 patients under faculty and alumni supervision. This model addresses healthcare access gaps while providing graduate students with hands-on clinical experience in patient evaluation and treatment planning. The clinic demonstrates a mutually beneficial approach to addressing workforce shortages and healthcare disparities in underserved populations.
