Gynecologist Abused Patients and Used Unsanitized Equipment, Prosecutors Say
Briefly

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, a 44-year-old gynecologist in Memphis, was arrested and charged with sexually abusing patients over five years and committing insurance fraud. He is accused of persuading victims to travel from other states for illegal sexual activities, while also conducting unnecessary medical tests and billing Medicaid and Medicare, enriching himself in the process. Kumar was reportedly the top provider for certain medical procedures in the state, indicating significant exploitation of governmental healthcare programs through fraudulent claims. The indictment reveals a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior masked as legitimate medical care.
Dr. Kumar acted as a predator in a white coat and used the cover of conducting medical examinations to put his patients at risk and enrich himself.
Between September 2019 and June 2024, Dr. Kumar was the top-paid provider in the state for Medicare and Medicaid hysteroscopy biopsies, according to the indictment.
Dr. Kumar billed the insurance agencies $2,515 each time for more than 40 procedures that were deemed fraudulent or not medically necessary.
The gynecologist persuaded four victims to travel to Tennessee from other states to engage in illegal sexual activity, according to an indictment.
