Healthwatch is an independent body representing patient views on local health and social care providers to improve services. The Local Government Association warns that scrapping Healthwatch could create a fragmented system and undermine accountability. The LGA says there is no plan for an alternative to Healthwatch, which currently challenges the NHS and community care providers when patients or the public report problems. The government says the changes will give patients a stronger, clearer voice at the heart of health and social care. Healthwatch is set to be scrapped alongside broader reforms including abolition of NHS England, centralising health and social care under the Department for Health and Social Care. The government claims the NHS Modernisation Bill will reduce bureaucracy and redirect resources to frontline care, with a second reading on Monday 1 June.
