A new study shows that grocery stores, particularly Walmart and Target, mostly stock ultraprocessed foods, which are often high in sugar, salt, and oil. Researchers analyzed over 50,000 items at Whole Foods, Walmart, and Target, finding that despite the wide selection of brands, actual choice is limited. Whole Foods offered more minimally processed options compared to the others, but all the stores leaned heavily toward processed items. The findings highlight a concerning trend in American diets, where grocery chains serve as significant sources of unhealthy food choices.
Despite the variety of packaging, most ultraprocessed foods share a common formula: they're high in sugar, salt, and oil and typically contain additives that enhance their flavor, color and shelf life.
Grocery stores, not fast-food outlets or convenience stores, are the primary source of ultraprocessed foods in U.S. diets.
