HPV is really common—approximately 80% of people are infected with it at some point in their lives. Most people clear it and probably never even know they had it.
Even for those for whom the virus doesn't go away, the majority don’t go on to get cancer. A diagnosis of HPV should not be equated to cancer.
Men can get HPV too, but they often don’t know unless they develop symptoms like genital warts, as there are no clinical guidelines for HPV testing in men.
There are over 300 types of HPV, with HPV 16 and 18 being high-risk types responsible for the majority of HPV-related cancers.
