"We show that diet plans generated by AI models tend to substantially underestimate total energy and key nutrient intake when compared to guideline-based plans prepared by a dietitian. Following such unbalanced or overly restrictive meal plans during the teenage years may negatively affect growth, metabolic health, and eating behaviours."
Researchers from Istanbul Atlas University tested AI models including ChatGPT and Gemini by requesting meal plans for weight-losing teenagers. The study found that AI-generated diets provided approximately 700 fewer calories on average compared to plans created by professional dietitians. These inadequate meal plans lack sufficient nutrients and calories necessary for teenage development. Following such restrictive diets during adolescence can negatively impact growth, metabolic health, and eating behaviors. Researchers warn teenagers against using AI tools for diet planning and advocate for developing safer AI tools with professional guidance and oversight.
