By the middle of the century, 1.91 million people are forecast to die worldwide directly because of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a stark increase from 1.14 million in 2021.
Dr. Mohsen Naghavi stated that antimicrobial medicines are one of the cornerstones of modern healthcare, and increasing resistance to them is a major cause for concern.
The study highlights that millions of deaths worldwide could be averted through better infection prevention, improved access to healthcare, and the creation of new antibiotics.
AMR will play a role in 8.2 million deaths annually by 2050, significantly up from 4.71 million, underscoring the growing threat to global health.
