San Jose Woman Still Suing Thai Restaurant For Serving Her Spicy Meatballs That She Says Injured Her
Briefly

Dr. Harjasleen Walia, a neurologist, filed a lawsuit against Coup de Thai restaurant after experiencing severe burns following the consumption of a spicy appetizer. She ordered the 'Dragon Balls' to be made mild due to her intolerance to spice, but the restaurant insists that the dish is unmodifiable. Dr. Walia alleges she suffered chemical burns to her vocal cords and esophagus after eating, as well as nasal injuries. Although she sought relief with milk or ice, her requests went unanswered. Experts suggest permanent damage is unlikely from the chilis used in the dish.
Dr. Walia claims she communicated her inability to tolerate spicy food and ordered a 'mild' version of the Dragon Balls appetizer, which the restaurant allegedly could not accommodate.
The lawsuit states that after consuming the dish, Dr. Walia experienced severe burning sensations in her mouth and later suffered from diagnosed internal 'chemical burns' to vital areas.
Despite the claims of permanent injury due to the dish, the National Capital Poison Center's Dr. Kelly Johnson-Arbor noted that permanent damage from Thai bird's eye chilis is unlikely.
Dr. Walia's lawsuit illustrates a serious concern regarding food preparation and customer communication within the restaurant service industry, particularly for patrons with dietary limitations.
