Youth mental health champion Patrick McGorry welcomed the federal budget's investment in psychology, urging a greater sense of urgency for reforms amidst the mental health crisis.
The budget allocates $888m for a new national online mental health service offering up to 10 free sessions annually for low intensity cases, and more comprehensive care for complex needs.
The government plans to upgrade and rename Head to Health centres to Medicare Mental Health Centres to provide integrated care by housing psychiatrists, psychologists, and GPs.
The new online mental health service, set to start in 2026, aims to offer early intervention to prevent more intensive care later, easing pressure on the existing Better Access scheme.
