NHS England is launching an 'improved' stop smoking pill, Varenicline, which has been found to be as effective as e-cigarettes in helping smokers quit.
The new version of Varenicline, while previously withdrawn due to impurities, is now approved for use, offering promise to over 85,000 smokers in the UK each year.
Varenicline works by curbing nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and when paired with behavioral support, it effectively aids roughly 25% of users in quitting smoking.
With smoking accounting for significant health issues and costs, the rollout of Varenicline is expected to save the NHS millions and prevent many smoking-related deaths.
