As millions face excessive heat warnings across the country, over 20 million Americans are affected by dangerously high temperatures, which can reach heat index values of 105F (40C). The National Weather Service warns that this level of heat poses serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers engaged in physical activities when heat advisories are active.
The World Health Organization has indicated that the climate crisis is contributing to an increase in heatwaves in terms of frequency, duration, intensity and magnitude, making extreme heat the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the US, with about 1,220 fatalities each year.
The American Red Cross emphasizes the importance of staying safe during heatwaves by limiting outdoor activities, avoiding sugary and alcoholic drinks, and seeking shelter in air-conditioned spaces when possible.
