In 2003, a fall led to a diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer, with an initial prognosis of eighteen months to live. Over the past twenty-one years, multiple treatments were pursued, including radiation and various forms of immunotherapy. Recently, after going out of remission for the seventh time in 2023, scans revealed tumors in various locations. A notable advancement in treatment included the use of CAR-T therapy, approved in 2022 specifically for cases like this.
In the fall of 2003, I slipped on the ice leaving my office one night. My hip hurt for a year afterward, but mostly I ignored it.
I was diagnosed with a rare and incurable form of blood cancer called multiple myeloma and told I had eighteen months to live.
In those twenty-one years, I underwent numerous treatments, including radiation therapy, intravenous immunotherapy, and monthly IV infusions.
The most remarkable treatment I've had is CAR-T therapy, which was approved by the FDA for my case only in 2022.
