Gonorrhoea is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, risking the possibility of it becoming untreatable in the future. Left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems.
The UK Health Security Agency confirmed there had been transmission of ceftriaxone-resistant gonorrhoea in England, with concerning rises in infections principally among young heterosexuals.
Between June 2022 and May 2024, 15 ceftriaxone-resistant gonorrhoea cases were detected in England, five of which involved extensively drug-resistant strains requiring hospitalization.
Public health officials urge people to protect themselves from gonorrhoea by using condoms, emphasizing the increasing difficulty in treating this infection due to rising antibiotic resistance.
