A nurse in Kampala, Uganda, has succumbed to Ebola, the first recorded death following the last outbreak ending in 2023. The patient, employed at Mulago Hospital, displayed symptoms leading to subsequent confirmation of the disease. Health authorities stated they were managing the situation effectively, with 44 contacts, including health workers, now being monitored. Although the source of the outbreak is still under investigation, Uganda’s health system is on alert due to its history with multiple Ebola outbreaks, including deadly incidents in the early 2000s and West Africa's severe outbreak between 2014-2016.
Diana Atwine, permanent secretary of the health ministry, reported that the patient, a 32-year-old nurse at Mulago Hospital, died after developing Ebola symptoms.
Health authorities emphasized they are 'in full control of the situation,' despite the death marking the first fatality since the last outbreak in 2023.
At least 44 contacts, including 30 health workers, have been listed for monitoring following the patient's death from Ebola.
Ebola, characterized by severe symptoms such as fever and diarrhea, remains a significant health concern in Uganda, which has faced multiple outbreaks.
