Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is a virus transmitted by mosquitoes that can cause severe neurological diseases in humans, including encephalitis and meningitis.
Though rare, a third of EEE cases result in death, making it a serious concern in states where the virus has been found in horses and mosquitos.
Currently, there have been confirmed EEE cases in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont, indicating a spread not only in humans but also in animal populations.
While Eastern Equine Encephalitis cannot be transmitted between humans or from horses, rare cases have occurred through organ transplants from an infected donor.
