David Mays, a 70-year-old cancer survivor dealing with multiple health challenges, frequently meets with friends in Mar Vista. He has chosen not to undergo dialysis treatment, which he feels would consume too much of his life. He lives in an apartment after previously residing in a vehicle but continues to face declining health. His nephrologist emphasizes the seriousness of his condition and honors his patient's treatment choices, with a focus on informed decisions and respecting individual wishes regarding mortality and care.
"It's one of our major topics of conversation," said Paul Morgan, a klatch regular. Mays is a cancer survivor with a full package of maladies, including diabetes, a faltering heart and failing kidneys.
"For the rest of my life," Mays said about needing to visit a dialysis center three times a week, for four hours each time.
"He is Stage 5," said Dr. Thet Thet Aung, Mays' nephrologist at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles.
"When a patient makes an informed choice, we respect their wishes," said Aung regarding treatment options for dialysis.
