Want a limited edition artwork tattooed on your skin? Berlin is the place to go
Briefly

Tattooing, an ancient art form, has seen a resurgence in Berlin through the Works on Skin project, which connects contemporary artists with tattoo studios. Amid a challenging art market, the initiative allows buyers to purchase limited edition tattoo designs that come with a signed fine-art print and a certificate granting them the right to tattoo the art on their bodies. This creates a new avenue for tattoo artists to thrive while diversifying the types of art available to customers, moving beyond traditional designs to include unique contemporary creations.
With tattoo studios in Berlin booming but many artists struggling to make a living, the Works on Skin project specializes in selling works by contemporary artists etched on the human body.
The art market has frozen up, and we tried to think about how we can unlock new fields for artistic practitioners and thus repair a broken market.
Via its website, Works on Skin sells artwork in numbered limited editions of 100, initially for 100 each but reaching up to 2,000 for the last remaining numbers.
Instead of familiar designs, customers can grace their skin with contemporary art, such as a neon doodle of a wine-drinking woman or the old sound system at Berghain.
