Fidencio Fifield-Perez's work reflects his experience as a DACA recipient and his artistic exploration of identity through discarded paper ephemera. His practice combines painting, printmaking, and collage to create pieces that reflect the emotional weight of borders and legal status. Raised in the U.S. after being born in Oaxaca, Mexico, Fifield-Perez's unique approach reveals the interplay between personal history and governmental structures, as seen in his depictions of plants and painted envelopes that symbolize intimate moments and community connections.
Painted envelopes are configured into intimate portraits of the only home I have made for myself, moved across the country, and mourned for with the imminent threat of DACA's repeal.
The plant paintings are physical and metaphorical maps of personal and official correspondence. They are hyper realistic depictions that foreground community relationships while simultaneously obscuring information deemed pertinent by the government.
