Why Germany, Italy and Japan still depend on US nuclear deterrence

In response to global instability, Germany, Italy, and Japan are ramping up defence spending to boost self-reliance, yet are constrained by historical precedents that favor civilian power and non-militarism. According to experts like Raffaele Marchetti, these nations, which are part of the G7 but not nuclear armed, struggle to transition into a combat-ready posture due to their pacifist legacies. Consequently, they remain reliant on U.S. nuclear deterrence as they attempt to strengthen their own military capabilities amidst rising geopolitical tensions.
Germany, Italy and Japan have become so-called civilian powers. Nowadays, it is really difficult for these countries to adopt a combat-ready mentality.
Given such uncertainty, Germany, Italy and Japan are among those trying to bolster their defence capabilities.
The goal of the post-war peace treaties was to get rid of hegemonism, militarism and aggressive adventurism in the culture of these three countries.
Experts told Euronews that these G7 countries, which are all non-nuclear states, will continue to depend on the US for nuclear deterrence against their adversaries.
