The 2025 German election in charts DW 02/18/2025
Briefly

As Germany approaches its election on February 23, 2025, current polling indicates the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian ally, the Christian Social Union (CSU), are in a strong position with a significant lead over the Alternative for Germany (AfD). The AfD has recently made notable gains in regional elections. Other parties, including the governing Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens, are trailing, while the Free Democratic Party (FDP) appears to be losing support. Voters will elect representatives to the Bundestag, which will determine the next chancellor through coalition-building.
Currently, the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), are ahead in polls compiled by the Berlin-based election research institute infratest dimap.
The governing Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Greens follow in third and fourth place, while the neoliberal Free Democratic Party (FDP), which was previously part of a three-way governing coalition, is running last.
