PKK declares ceasefire with Turkey after more than 40 years of conflict
Briefly

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has announced a ceasefire with Turkey following a significant appeal from imprisoned leader Abdullah Ocalan for the group to disband and cease hostilities. This marks the first response from the PKK after Ocalan's request for dissolution as part of a broader push for peace after over four decades of conflict, which has claimed more than 40,000 lives. The PKK emphasized the need for a secure environment and better conditions for Ocalan to facilitate the congress he advocates for to officially dissolve the organization.
The PKK declared a ceasefire with Turkey, responding to Abdullah Ocalan’s call to disband, marking a potential shift in the decades-long conflict.
We agree with the content of the call as it is and we say that we will follow and implement it, the committee added.
The PKK stated they are ready to convene a congress as Ocalan wanted, but a suitable secure environment must first be created.
After the last round of peace talks collapsed in 2015, there had been no further contact until a recent meeting in October.
