Merz demands EU scrap ban on sale of combustion engine cars
"We're sending the right signal to the commission with this letter,"
"a technology-neutral way"
"The future viability of the German automotive industry, securing jobs, that is the key argument for us,"
"We agree that the future of the industry is electric... (but) we need to be open to more technologies, we need flexibility,"
Germany will urge the European Union to abandon or alter the planned 2035 ban on the sale of combustion-engine cars and request permission to allow hybrid and highly efficient combustion-engine cars to be sold beyond 2035 alongside electric vehicles. The German government will write to the European Commission seeking technology-neutral climate protection and regulatory flexibility. The EU ban has faced automaker complaints about being unworkable amid slow EV uptake and will be reviewed. Germany’s coalition agrees changes are needed to protect the automotive sector, secure jobs, and address high EV investment costs and Chinese competition; a purchase subsidy up to €5,000 will be introduced.
