As Germany approaches its general election, an anti-corruption watchdog has expressed concern over the country's party funding laws, which allow unlimited donations. Amidst large contributions to the AfD, particularly a substantial €2.35 million donation aimed at funding an election campaign, Transparency Germany's Chair, Alexandra Herzog, highlighted the need for reforms, proposing a cap of €50,000 on donations per donor annually. The declining ranking in Transparency International's index, dropping from 9th to 15th place, raises fears about the integrity of political competition and public trust.
In Germany what a person can gift to a party is unrestricted. We are calling for an upper limit of 50,000 per donor, per year, per party.
Insufficient transparency and uncontrolled large donations jeopardize fair political competition and undermine citizens' trust in democracy.
