The CDU and SPD, potential partners in Germany's upcoming government, aim to modify the debt brake to allocate funds for defense and infrastructure. A proposed €500 billion ($542 billion) special fund has raised concerns from the Greens, who threaten to block the legislation unless it includes substantial investments in climate protection. Greens leaders Droge and Hasselmann emphasized that the plan must prioritize environmental investments. As changing the debt brake requires broad parliamentary support, negotiations remain complex, with both CDU and SPD expressing hope for a compromise amidst these challenges.
"Whoever wants our approval for more investment must also show that it is really about more investment in climate protection, more investment in the economy in this country," Droge told reporters.
CCo-leader Lars Klingbeil mentioned, "I am not giving up confidence that this can succeed," expressing optimism towards the coalition negotiations despite reservations from the Greens.
