Scholz and his party condemned a claim by CDU member Roderich Kiesewetter about a supposed meeting with Putin, labeling it a "false allegation" and "deeply inappropriate."
Government spokesman Hebestreit denied the meeting, saying, "It would make no sense at all," and confirmed that "legal steps" were forthcoming against Kiesewetter.
SPD General Secretary Miersch characterized the allegation as "vicious and sneaky," while parliamentary leader Mutzenich labeled it as "pure fabrication" and called for an apology.
The SPD demanded retraction from Kiesewetter, citing the need for political integrity and accountability, especially with elections approaching.
