Angela Merkel, former German chancellor, expressed criticism towards Friedrich Merz for relying on the far-right AfD to pass a parliamentary motion. In a statement, Merkel emphasized the importance of not remaining silent in this context, highlighting the political responsibility involved. She acknowledged the AfD's rise as a result of internal CDU disputes over migration policies but distanced herself from blame, stating the party's increase to 20% was not her doing, as it was 11% upon her departure from office.
"I thought it was right not to remain silent in such a decisive situation," Merkel said at an event hosted by Die Zeit newspaper. "I found this to be a question of fundamental importance."
Merkel also stated, "When I left office, the AfD was at 11%. The fact that it is now at 20% is no longer my responsibility."
