EXPLAINED: What happens next in Germany's rapid-fire coalition talks
Briefly

The CDU/CSU and SPD parties are set to present their coalition negotiation results after a week of talks. While some working groups made progress on issues like digitalisation, critical topics like migration and social security pose significant challenges. CDU leader Friedrich Merz aims for an Easter deadline to form a new government. The SPD's confidence, stemming from its recent leadership, contrasts with CDU's skepticism about the SPD’s self-assurance after a poor election performance. The outcomes of these negotiations will be crucial for Germany's future governance.
On Monday at 5pm, 16 working groups tasked with penning a new political programme for Germany will present their results to party leaders from the conservative CDU/CSU and the centre-left SPD parties. Although some groups found negotiation easier, topics like migration and social security remain contentious.
Having kicked off formal talks on Friday, March 14th, the specialised groups had just 10 days to whirl through negotiations and come up with policies that both sides could agree on.
