Chancellor Olaf Scholz's firing of his finance minister has led to the collapse of Germany's ruling coalition, forcing him to govern as a minority leader.
We need a government that is able to act, that has the strength to make the necessary decisions for our country, Scholz told reporters.
The coalition formed by Scholz had become increasingly strained, as Lindner wanted to cut taxes and cut benefits to improve Germany's economy.
Scholz's planned parliamentary vote on confidence in his government scheduled for January could trigger snap elections by the end of March.
