Afghanistan: Are the Taliban still isolated after 4 years? DW 08/14/2025
Briefly

The Taliban has maintained a strong hold on power in Afghanistan since the US withdrawal in August 2021. Countries like Russia and China are establishing ties with the Taliban, with Russia being the first to recognize the regime. China is particularly interested in Afghanistan’s resources for its Belt and Road Initiative, though it has not formally recognized the Taliban. The West must acknowledge the Taliban's complete control over Afghan public life, which influences international relations. Germany has carried out deportations, returning Afghan nationals, including convicted felons, to Afghanistan.
In this way, Russia is taking over the US role in Afghanistan, which the US gave up voluntarily with the withdrawal of its troops four years ago.
China needs Afghanistan and its raw materials for its global infrastructure project, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The West must face the fact that the Taliban control every aspect of public life in Afghanistan. This is also the foundation of ties between other countries and the Taliban regime.
Germany has organized two deportation flights to Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in August 2021, sending a total of 109 Afghan nationals back.
