"Management is absolutely serious about all this. This is not saber-rattling in the collective bargaining round," said Daniela Cavallo, Volkswagen's works council head. This emphasizes the gravity of VW's intentions regarding plant closures.
"All German VW plants are affected by these plans. None of them are safe," Cavallo stated, illustrating the breadth of the proposed changes and the uncertainty facing the workforce.
"We expect Volkswagen and its board of management to outline viable concepts for the future at the negotiating table, instead of fantasies of cutbacks," said IG Metall District Manager Thorsten Groger, highlighting the union's strong opposition.
"This is a deep stab in the heart of the hard-working VW workforce," commented Groger, reflecting the emotional impact of the announcements on employees.
