Tens of thousands celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall 35 years ago

For the anniversary celebrations on Saturday, event organisers created a temporary wall of 5,000 posters designed by children and adults under the motto "We uphold freedom," which attracted a steady flow of visitors, including many foreign tourists. It stands along a four-kilometre stretch of the former wall in downtown Berlin.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz said of November 9th 1989 in a speech to mark the anniversary, "a lucky day for which we Germans are still grateful today." The Berlin Wall stood for 28 years at the front line of the Cold War.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner noted at an official anniversary event, "Uphold freedom, because without freedom everything else is nothing." He emphasized that "freedom and democracy have never been a matter of course," warning of current threats.
