Martje Thalmann, The Tower Keeper Of Munster
"It sounds like a Medieval job title because, well, it is one. The Tower Keeper of Münster remains a genuine position to this day. Part ceremonial, part practical, this unique role speaks to the remarkable heritage of the city, but there's also nobody better placed to talk about contemporary Münster than the person watching it evolve in front of their very eyes."
"Münster is one of the most charming cities in Germany, with a history dating back over 1,200 years, but its present and future is just as fascinating thanks to a forward-thinking population and a slew of cultural festivities. To get the low down on this ever-evolving city, we figured that the best person to ask was the one quite literally keeping a watchful eye over the place..."
Münster combines more than 1,200 years of history with a forward-thinking population and active cultural life. The Tower Keeper position remains a genuine role that merges ceremonial and practical duties, including watching for fires and foes and sounding signals with a copper horn atop the City and Market Church St. Lamberti. Martje Thalmann has held the post since 2014 and is the first woman in the role locally. The tower guard tradition dates back to at least 1383, with many original tasks unchanged and some archaic duties retired. A modern responsibility includes maintaining an informative blog. Thalmann also works as a teacher, musician, and keen city cyclist.
