Prince Frederik of Luxembourg passed away at the young age of 22 due to POLG mitochondrial disease, a rare genetic disorder that leads to multiple organ dysfunction. His family, particularly his father Prince Robert, has expressed deep sorrow in their public announcement. Frederik, diagnosed at age 14, exemplified humor and compassion even in his final moments, reminding those around him of the strength people can exhibit despite severe challenges. His passing coincided with Rare Disease Day, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about such conditions.
"It is with a very heavy heart that my wife and I would like to inform you of the passing of our son, The POLG Foundation Founder and Creative Director, Frederik," his father Prince Robert said.
"The extremely rare disease is a genetic disorder that robs the body's cells of energy, in turn causing progressive multiple organ dysfunction and failure," the POLG statement explained.
"Even in his last moments, his humor, and his boundless compassion, compelled him to leave us with one last laugh to cheer us all up," Prince Robert said.
"The disease is compared to having a faulty battery that never fully recharges, is in a constant state of depletion and eventually loses power," according to the POLG Foundation.
