Germany: Verdi union calls strikes at two major airports DW 02/21/2025
Briefly

The Verdi trade union has announced a 24-hour strike at Cologne-Bonn and Dusseldorf International airports due to an ongoing wage dispute for public sector employees. Strikes will commence on Sunday evening in Cologne and Monday morning in Dusseldorf, disrupting numerous passenger flights. The demand includes an eight percent wage increase and additional monthly compensation, citing high pressure and staff shortages as major issues impacting workers. The first two rounds of negotiations have failed, prompting Verdi to extend strike actions nationwide ahead of the next round set for March 14.
"The employers' previous refusal to pay is also hitting employees at NRW airports hard," said Verdi regional director Gabriele Schmidt about the airport strikes.
Verdi is demanding eight percent more money, but at least 350 more per month, as well as higher bonuses for particularly stressful work.
