Tens of thousands of people have been turned back at the border in the 15 months since the checks began, and nearly 2,000 people smugglers have been detained. A survey by consultancy firm EY found 16% of German residents considered their job "very insecure" or "rather insecure", compared with 22% at the height of the 2008/9 global financial crisis. Homemade New Year’s fireworks killed two teenagers in western Germany during the Christmas and New Year week.
