A demonstration against increasing traffic on the Brenner Pass between Austria and Italy is planned near Matrei at midday (1000 GMT). The Brenner corridor, including subsidiary roads, will be closed for at least eight hours, with disruption likely extending into southern Germany. The Bavarian Red Cross is preparing for traffic jams between Rosenheim and the Austrian border, and motorbikes may be used to deliver water to stranded people. Police in southern Bavaria will deploy in large numbers to manage congestion and keep emergency vehicles able to reach accident sites. Motorists are advised to avoid the Tyrol region. The protest is called by Karl Muhlsteiger, mayor of Gries, citing adverse health effects from fine particle smog and noise among 15,000 residents. He also demands keeping truck bans at night, on weekends, and public holidays, and building modern noise barriers.
"Demonstrators plan to rally near Matrei on the Austrian side of the Brenner highway at midday (1000 GMT), leading to the closure of the whole Brenner corridor, including subsidiary roads, for at least eight hours."
