In 2018, Beate Zschape, one of the far-right terrorists and an accomplice to those who killed Boulgarides along with 10 others, was sentenced by the Higher Regional Court in Munich to life in prison, with the court determining a particularly severe degree of guilt."
"Despite having done little during the trial to shed light on the series of murders, Zschape has been accepted into a rehabilitation program called "Exit," a support system for people who want to leave extremist groups, which offers counseling and practical assistance with reintegration into society. Barbara John, the federal government's ombudswoman for the victims and surviving relatives, suspects that the NSU terrorist intends to use her acceptance into the program to increase the chances of being released early from prison."
Beate Zschape, convicted member of the National Socialist Underground responsible for murders and other crimes, has been accepted into Exit, a rehabilitation program for leaving extremists. Victims' families, including Michalina Boulgarides whose father was murdered in 2005, express shock and call the acceptance a slap in the face. Bereaved relatives launched a petition on Campact and wrote to the federal government demanding Zschape's removal from the program and permanent, adequate victim pensions. Barbara John, the federal victims' ombudswoman, suspects Zschape may seek to use the program to improve chances of early parole. Most NSU murder victims had immigrant backgrounds.
