Far-right gains in east Germany could deal blow to economy DW 09/23/2024
Briefly

"Many skilled workers will likely migrate to western Germany or larger cities. Brandenburg, like Saxony and Thuringia, stands to lose out because of this," said Marcel Fratzscher, emphasizing the region's potential economic challenges due to talent drain prompted by the AfD’s growing anti-migration stance.
According to a survey conducted by the ifo Institute, about 84% of the economists polled expect the AfD's successes in Thuringia and Saxony to have 'negative or highly negative effects on the region's attractiveness to skilled labor,' indicating that this political shift deeply concerns experts.
The far-right AfD has gained 5.7 percentage points more than in the elections five years ago, scoring similar results as previous elections in Thuringia and Saxony, evidencing a troubling trend of rising extremism in the east.
