Czech Republic: Are arms, not cars, the new economic engine? DW 05/13/2025
Briefly

The Czech Republic has achieved the highest car production per capita globally, manufacturing over 1.4 million vehicles in 2024. However, a significant production drop of 7.1% occurred in early 2025 due to decreased demand in Western markets, influenced by challenges within the European automotive industry. Simultaneously, the Czech arms industry is thriving, with predictions that it could become a key economic driver. Although some experts see potential in arms production, skepticism remains about it fully replacing the automotive sector's role in the economy.
Danuse Nerudova, member of the European Parliament's Committee on Budgets, stated, 'The defense industry can become a new engine of the Czech and European economy.'
Petr Zahradnik, a Czech economist, remarked, 'Czech arms factories are experiencing golden times... I don't believe arms will replace the automotive sector.'
