Eigerplatz depot in Bern, Switzerland, obtained Smartbus Ready certification after a Depot Autonomy Readiness Assessment focused on autonomous depot manoeuvres. The depot is Bernmobil’s main city-centre operating base and is a fully enclosed multi-storey facility with parking on two levels. The assessment identifies the depot’s manoeuvres as among the most demanding in comparable European operations, including daily reverse parking for 12- and 18-metre buses. Autonomous Systems estimated a payback period of about 4.9 years and an ROI of 89% over 12 years for a hypothetical fleet of 100 buses. The calculation assumes recovery of 10–15 minutes of driver time per bus per day and about 9,125 driver hours recovered annually under difficult scenario conditions.
