Afghan footballer faces deportation from Germany DW 04/19/2025
Briefly

Nazira Khairzad shares her painful journey after fleeing Afghanistan when the Taliban regained power in 2021. She faced the possibility of being deported back to Italy, causing immense fear for her and her family. Separated for a long period, she was reunited with her sister Nazima in early 2024. Both sisters excelled in sports despite cultural challenges in Afghanistan, but their lives were uprooted when the Taliban banned women from sports. They overcame adversity with resilience and are now grateful to be together again.
When I received the letter telling me I might be sent back to Italy, I was overcome by a deep sense of hopelessness, fear and uncertainty.
My life in Afghanistan was in danger. If I had stayed back then, the Taliban would probably have killed me.
I'm very proud of my sister, she's my role model and my best friend.
It was a difficult time. We weren't able to see each other for a long while. But now we're happy to be reunited.
