Will Austin embrace air taxis? - Austin Monitor
"As a matter of fact, we've had these (vehicles) here in Austin, at South by Southwest,"
"So this is happening, this is real."
"I support technology. I'm gonna tell you, I'm a technology wonk. I love it. But we need to think about the impacts this can have,"
Air taxi development has advanced to on-the-ground testing in Austin, including flights during South by Southwest. Large private investments followed recent presidential executive orders directing the Federal Aviation Administration to accelerate air taxi deployment, including a major capital raise by Archer Aviation. Companies such as Archer and Joby pursue electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs) to enable urban flights; eVTOLs are electric, quieter, and more fuel-efficient than conventional helicopters. Anticipated municipal impacts include increased electrical charging demand, land-use decisions for vertipads, and integration of a new aircraft category into complex airspace regulations.
