Rebecca Xun and Lucia Camacho developed the Vape-o-Gotchi, a humorously sinister virtual pet that dies if users stop vaping. Initially conceived as a guilt-inducing tool to deter nicotine use, the project evolved during the "Stupid Hackathon" into a satirical device that playfully promotes vaping. This reflects a dark commentary on societal attitudes toward nicotine consumption. The inventors, understanding the addiction aspect of vaping, aimed to create an engaging product that ironically encourages a behavior they are critical of, thus blending humor with awareness of serious health issues.
The Vape-o-Gotchi emerged from a mix of humor and social commentary, highlighting the bizarre normalization of vaping in today's culture.
Our project started from a simple idea, but we aimed to humorously address the serious aspects of nicotine use and addiction.
