Southwest Airlines is implementing a new safety policy mandating passengers keep their portable chargers visible during flights, effective May 28. This move comes amid increasing incidents of lithium-ion battery malfunctions, which pose a fire risk. Previous incidents, like a power bank igniting during a flight, emphasize the urgency behind the policy. Southwest aims to enable flight attendants to quickly access potential hazards, thereby improving safety for both passengers and crew. Notifications to passengers are being sent via the airline's app to prepare for this change.
Using portable charging devices while stored in a bag or overhead bin will no longer be permitted. Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of its customers and employees.
In the rare event a lithium battery overheats or catches fire, quick access is critical and keeping power banks in plain sight allows for faster intervention and helps protect everyone onboard.
