More than 750 migrants intercepted south of Greek island of Gavdos

In recent operations coordinated by the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Centre, over 753 immigrants were rescued in the waters surrounding Gavdos Island. The largest rescue involved 430 people from an overloaded fishing boat 25 nautical miles southeast of Gavdos, with support from a patrol boat and a Panama-flagged tanker. Additional rescues included 67 migrants intercepted 30 nautical miles south of Gavdos by a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship, and around 70 others rescued 32 nautical miles south of Limeni with assistance from a Portuguese cargo ship. All rescued individuals were safely transported to ports for reception and care.
